Xbox Boss Phil Spencer denies the company will raise prices on its consoles for now. Already in August it was announced that Sony would increase the price of its PS5 console in several regions. While these increases weren’t too drastic and current financial projections suggest they won’t hurt Sony’s sales too much, many gamers still feared it would result in a price hike across all major platform owners. However, it seems that Sony is alone in this decision.
Following news that Sony was raising prices for the PS5 digital and disc editions, both Nintendo and Xbox issued statements denying they would follow suit. Nintendo’s UK arm made no promises regarding its pricing strategy, but said there were no plans to increase Switch prices for now. These price hikes didn’t come out of the blue, and Sony was trying to justify its decision to increase the cost of the PS5 due to hardware shortages around the world, which has caused serious supply chain problems.
In a new interview with CNBC, Xbox boss Phil Spencer was again asked about a possible increase in the cost of the Xbox Series S and X. Spencer said there are “no plans today” to increase the price of either console, but it doesn’t appear that this is a permanent decision. Spencer couldn’t rule out the idea of increasing the price of Xbox consoles in the future, stating that the company couldn’t say it “never will.”
However, with the economic situation around the world currently uncertain, Spencer says that raising the price point for consoles is not the “right move”. Additionally, Spencer spoke about the pride he has in the Xbox Series S’ position in the gaming market, as it’s the most affordable console Microsoft has produced. The Xbox Series S has also been doing well in terms of sales up to this point, even managing to beat the PS5 in Japan in terms of consoles sold in May.
The fact that Phil Spencer has no plans to increase the price of either the Xbox Series S or X anytime soon will likely give some relief to many gamers still waiting to get their hands on the console. Xbox has also made its Game Pass subscription service more affordable for those who want to share an account with a few friends. The Xbox Game Pass Friends and Family plan allows up to five players access to the entire library of games available through the service.
